Dan moet je het lettertype en lettergrootte van je buttons ook definiëren.
Dat kan met bijvoorbeeld:

font:11px Tahoma,Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;

Of bedoel je bij #buttons :?:

Het werkt inderdaad, maar het plaatje wat verschijnt bij mouse-over verschijnt nu maar half (alleen achter de tekst en niet eromheen) - hoe zorg ik ervoor dat de volle 22 px verschijnen?

Die margin-left was vanwege dat de button niet helemaal aan de zeikant van het scherm komt, hij maakt niet uit voor het plaatje, hij wordt in de hoogte maar half weergegeven.
